WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Burwood.—The retiring president (Mrs Freeman) .presided at the annual general meeting of the Burwood Women’s Institute. An addsess on institute affairs was given by Mrs Deans. A letter was read from a member of the British Institute thanking members for a gift parcel recently received. A gift of food, to be included in the next parcel sent to Britain by the institute, was handed in by each of the members. The following officers were elected:—president, Mrs Wilson; secretary, Mrs Young; committee, Mesdames Wilson, Young, Cade, Cusack, Clronin, Anderson, Mitchell, R. Smith, Ritchie, Leverett, Wells, and Thomson; delegate to the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institute, Mrs Wilson; producer for the drama club, Mrs Young. Members of the retiring committee were hostesses for the afternoon. Competitions resulted as follows:—Large bloom: Mrs Wells 1, Mrs M. Thomson 2, Mrs Cade 3; small bloom, Mrs Hand 1, Mrs Anton 2, Mrs Hunter 3; spike, Mrs Wells 1, Mrs Windus 2, Mrs Anton 3; jar of mixed flowers, Mrs Wells 1, Mrs Cusack 2, Mrs Russell 3; worked guest towel, Mrs Partridge 1, Mrs Cusack 2, Mrs Scott 3.
Mount Pleasant.—Mrs Harbutt was elected president of the Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute at the annual meeting held recently at the home of Mrs Turland. The retiring president (Mrs Worrall) presided. Musical items were presented by Mrs Mason and Mrs Gay. Winners of the yearly competitions were: Mesdames Edgar, Harbutt, Cowan, and Murphy. The following committee members were elected: Mesdames Cropp, Worrall, Hodder, Keenlyside, R. Sladen, Turland, Smith, Roach, Harbutt, and Miss Bridgman.
