CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Henry Wood (Cashmere Hills) has left for the North Island on the first stage of her journey to England, where she will live for some time._ Regret at the departure from Christchurch of Mr- and Mrs F. J. T. Grigg, and appreciation of their services to the Christchurch Cultural Society, were expressed by the president (Dr. G. Jobberns) at the annual meeting of the society held on Saturday evening. Mr and Mrs Grigg will make their home in Wellington. Mrs J. W. Andrews (Mayoress of Lower Hutt) will leave Auckland tomorrow for the United States to visit her daughter, Mrs G. B. Calkins, San Jose, California. During the last few weeks she has attended many farewell gatherings given in her honour. Miss Ailsa Beaney (Christchurch), organising secretary of Toe H women’s section, is visiting Wellington on Toe H business. Australia’s queen of the services (Miss Audrey Smith) has arrived in Wellington for* a 30-day tour of New Zealand. As contest winner for the competition held for the Royal Australian Air Force memorial appeal, Miss Smith is being specially welcomed in the Dominion by all connected with aviation. On Friday she was entertained by the Wellington Aero Club, by the Wellington branch of the Returned Services’ Association, and at the Air Department, where she was met by the Chief of the Air Staff (Air Vice-Marshal A. de T. Nevill). News has been received in~Wellington of the death of Mrs Kathleen Kiddie, who as Mrs Kathleen Johnston Brown was well known in Wellington and Gisborne 30 years ago. On the death of Mr William Brown in 1918, she went to Scotland, where, at “Dun Halin,” Polmont, she gave a hearty welcome to all New Zealanders visiting Scotland. A few years ago she married Mr J. Kiddie, of “Craigerine,” North Berwick, who died about three years ago. A holiday lasting three weeks and three days, during which they rode 500 miles on horseback, was enjoyed recently by three young women, Misses Paulette Woodhouse. of Bluecliffs station. South Canterbury; Rosemary Clark-Hall, of Christchurch: and Barbara Austin, of Kaiapoi. Joining forces at Waimate, they travelled 500 miles by horseback through one of the most isolated regions of the country. During the trip they enjoved the hospitality of deer cullers and road menders, slept in Works Department huts, and once on a coal sack under a patch of broom. They crossed from Otago to South Westland over the Haast Pass, and for variety, hitch-hiked home from Greymouth over the Lewis Pass. At the monthly meeting of the Linwood ty'anch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union held in St. George’s Hall. Linwood avenue. Mrs C. R. N. Mackie presided. Regret was expressed at the death of Mrs Peryman, who had edited the union’s official organ. It was reported that members had. sent parcels to the Templeton Farm School for occupational work, and that patients in the mental hospital had been visited. Because of its international nature, the Red Cross Society is able to .help wherever help is called for, as is illustrated recently. The New Zealand Red Cross Society received a cable message from the Australian society saying that a woman passenger on the Wahine was an invalid. Her destination was Christchurch, and the society was asked to meet her and do all they could for her welfare and comfort. On arrival, the woman was met by a V.A.D. and transport personnel. She was transferred to the Rangatira, was met at Lyttelton by Red Cross representatives. and taken to the home of her relatives in Christchurch.
