TREES HALT EROSION.—The effect of tree planting in halting erosion is well demonstrated at the Ashley State Forest. The top picture, taken from the forest look-out, shows the planted area in the Stony creek valley in the background, and part of an unplanted tributary gully of Fox’s creek in the foreground. The bottom picture shows a bad slip in one of the tributary gullies of Stony creek. An extension of this slip has been stopped by the planting in this area of pinus radiata.
