WRAPPING OF BREAD

k DISCUSSION BY BAKERS (PA.) DUNEDIN, March 20. “It should not be taken that we oppose the wrapping of bread over the counter. The question is of wrapping bread at the .bakehouse,” said Mr W. A. S. Rennie, in a discussion on the practicability of wrapping bread at the annual conference of the Federation of ‘Bakers and Pastrycooks. “It’s impracticability,” he added, ’‘lies in the cost factor and compensation, the need for the standardisation of shapes, and the availability of waxed paper and necessary machinery.” The president (Mr F. W. Creswell) said that while a Gazette notice might in practice be ignored, it was most unsatisfactory that there should be such an order requiring the wrapping of bread at the bakehouse hanging over the industry’s head. Delegates were agreed thht the wrapping of bread at the bakehouse would no doubt come in time, as it had overseas. At the present time, however if the regulation was nut into force, it would practically eliminate the small man from the industry. It was decided to inform the Minister of Health that the regulations relating to the wrapping of bread at the bakehouse were impracticable, and expressing regret that the baking industry had not been consulted before the drawing up of the regulations. It was further resolved that the council should take steps to have the order amended.
