TRANSPORT OF PARTIES
LICENCES GRANTED FOR LIMITED PERIOD TRAMWAY BOARD OPPOSES APPLICATIONS Two applications for passenger service licfihces, authorising the carriage of contract parties within a 50-mile radius of the Chief Post Office, were opposed by the Tramway Board before the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr V. Raines) yesterday. The authority granted the applications, but the licences will expire next year at the same time as other passenger licences, and the applicants were told that they must be prepared for stronger opposition if they applied for renewals. C. J Coombes, Richmond terrace, New Brighton, and William Newton, Queensbury street, Christchurch, were the applicants. Mr J. D. Hutchison, for the Tramway Board, said that the board had plenty of vehicles to give the services planned by Coombes and Newton. Shortage of staff and hours of work required by awards, were the difficulty, and a dozen buses might be lying idle at peak traffic hours It was hoped that this would not last, and he therefore submitted that if licences were granted they should be for a short period. Mr Raines commented that there was no reason why passenger work should be given to goods operators if passenger vehicles were available. There was no more reason why goods operators should do this work than that the Tramway Board should be licenced to operate as a general carrier. Mr E. C. Brittenden. for the Railways Department, said he would be forced to object to a renewal of the licences, because so many similar applications were being granted.
