SPORTS GROUND FEES

COUNCIL AUTHORISES INCREASE

HIGHER MAINTENANCE COSTS

Authority to increase fees for Christchurch sports grounds, including those in Hagley Park, was given by the City Council last evening to the reserves committee.

The chairman of the reserves committee (Cr. J. N. Clarke) said a special meeting of the committee would be held this week to consider the increased costs of maintaining sports grounds and playing areas. The committee would like to have authority to increase charges. This was an urgent matter and the committee wished to have power to act. Cr. J. L. Hay said there was a general move to bring fees for municipal sports grounds all over New Zealand on to a more uniform basis.

Cr. M. E. Lyons said sports grounds in some other centres had been more expensive to construct than those in Christchurch, so it might not be equitable to charge as much, but there was an urgent need to raise charges, because of increased costs of labour and plant. The council would not like raising the charges, but it had in mind that young people, like boy cricketers, would be looked after.
