FRIDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) REMANDED tkTI 10 ” 135 Morgan, alias Thomas James Milton, a truck driver, aged 27, was remanded till March 21 on a charge of obtaining from Fred Chadwick on February 26 the sum of £9 in money, by falsely representing that a cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand at Christchurch for £l/ 10s, payable to L. S. Thomas and signed W. S. Thomas, was a good and valid order for that amount. Percy Guy Harper, a gardener, aged 63 (Mr J. K. Moloney), was remanded to appear on March 31 on a charge of indecent assault on a male. Bail was fixed at £2OO in his own recognisance and one surety of £2OO.

THEFT James Hearn, alias John Lane, alias Peter Cowan, alias Steve Lane, alias Harold James Hearn, alias Steve Cowan, a ship’s fireman, aged 29, was charged with stealing at Christchurch on December 24, 1946, one golf jacket valued at ss, the property of John Davis Marks. He was further charged with stealing at Christchurch on December 24, 1946. one pair of linen sheets valued at £3 19s 6d, the property of Eileen Elsie Lawson.

The accused pleaded guilty to each charge. Senior-Detective F. J. Brady said complaints had been received from the owners of two motor-cars, from which articles had been stolen on Christmas Eve. The. Lyttelton police found the stolen articles in a room occupied by the accused. He was subsequently arrested at New Plymouth. He had a bad record with 46 or 47 previous convictions. Hearn was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be served concurrently. UNLAWFULLY ON RACECOURSE For being found unlawfully on a racecourse at Motukarara on March 1, Joseph Benson, alias Pameamene Hokipa, a labourer, aged 29, was fined £5. The Court had no power to suppress his name, said the Magistrate in reply to his application. TRAFFIC BREACHES Offenders against the traffic regulations were fined as follows, costs being additional in each case:— No warrant of fitness; Alister Browne, ss. No light on cycle: Percy Lye, 10s; Thomas Mark, costs only; Douglas Alexander Wallis, 10s. No head or tail lights: Frederick A. H. Penfold, 20s (no warrant, ss). Failure to give way: Douglas Bruce Pope, 20s.
