F. J. SMITH’S TEAM

ARRIVAL FROM TAKANINI TO-DAY

Doctor Ted, Bonnie Jack, Bexley’s Pride, and Great Belwin, which are trained at Takanini by F. J. Smith, are expected to arrive in Christchurch this morning and they will be given their final work-outs for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting on the New Brighton Trotting Club’s course next week. Bonnie Jack secured minor placings at the Wellington and Auckland Trotting Club’s recent meetings and she is expected to race well, at Addington. Bexley’s Pride, a five-year-old mare by Josedale Grattan from Bexley Girl, has been unplaced in her 10 starts since winning the Labour Day Handicap from Golden Shadow and Nyallo Scott at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on October 28, but she looked well when she raced at the Wellington meeting last month and she may soon show a return to form.

One of the best four-year-olds seen out this season, Doctor Ted has recorded four wins, two second placings and a fourth placing and he should pay expenses on the trip. Now a five-year-old, Great Belwin brought his total stake-earnings to £9015 when he won the Ranfurly Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on February 8. A gelding by Worthy Belwin from Agnes Bingen, he commenced his racing career at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on January 20, 1945, when he finished in second place to Red Horizon in the First Epsom Handicap. A bold pacer, he attracted attention to his prospects by registering two wins in his other three starts for the season. A game and consistent racehorse, Great Belwin has started in 25 races since he began racing for 11 wins, seven second placings, a third placing and a fourth placing, and that record entitles him to respect whenever he starts at the Easter meeting.
