MARLBOROUGH CLUB

APPRECIATE WINS TWO RACES

MAVIS GRATTAN’S LARGE DIVIDEND

Confidently driven by E. T. Fairbairn, who races her in partnership with Mr A. Fairbairn, Appreciate showed her best form for the season when she outclassed the field in the Marlborough Handicap, the main event at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting, which was held at Blenheim on Saturday. The favourite, Theabelle, began smartly, and she set the pace *over the first mile with Lottie Jinks, Appreciate, and Stammel lying handy. Authentic, which had finished in second place to Susy Lee in the previous event, the Seddon Handicap, refused to strike his gait at the start of the Marlborough Handicap, and when he eventually settled down to pace he was giving away starts of up to 150 yards. Appreciate took over the role of pacemaker with half the journey covered and soon put a break of about five lengths on Theabelle. Lottie Jinks, and Stammel. Appreciate stayed on well, and, after entering the straight well clear of the field, she won without being extended by four lengths from Theabelle. In an interesting finish for third place .Stammel just got up in time to shade Lottie Jinks,

Appreciate in the Pelorus Handicap later in the afternoon, and she confirmed her earlier form when she won comfortably from True Comrade. The latter set the pace until the straight was reached; but once Fairbairn let Apprenciate do her best the result was not in doubt. Trained at Hornby by A. Fairbairn, Appreciate hes raced consistently this season for three wins and five minor placings in 11 starts, and, on Saturday’s form, she should prove capable of winning in better company. A six-year-old mare, she is by Quite Sure from Tiny Audubon.

After two unplaced efforts earlier in the day, Mavis Grattan surprised when she finished well over the last two furlongs to win the Picton Handicap and return her supporters a dividend of just on half a century. Owned by Mr B. T. Roper, this five-year-old daughter of Grattan Loyal and Daphne de Oro is the first winner to be trained by G. Alexander, who recently set up a| a public trainer at Cust. Alexander, who drove Mavis Grattan, also secured a second placing with Monitress and he should continue to pay expenses with these two horses. The weather was fine, the track was fast, and the racing was interesting throughout the day. The totalisator handled the record sum of £19,902, compared with £15,818 at the meeting last year.
