SUNLIGHT LEAGUE
MONTHLY MEETING HELD Dr. D. E. Currie presided at a meeting of the Sunlight League Committee held last week. It was decided to set up a Commission to draw up a plan for the future of Birch Hill, the members being Mr L. W. McCaskill, Mr Edwyn Wilding, and Mr E. M. Gibson. It was reported that difficulty was being experienced with the well, which now has to go down deeper than its present level of 45 feet, in order to get purer water and a bigger flow. This will necessitate the use of a pump to fan air down the well shaft, and so far all efforts to obtain the use of one have been unsuccessful. It was also reported that carpenters and men to install the new drainage system, who were expected last year had not yet arrived.
A short account of the Smedley Farnf Training Home in Hawke’s Bay, for North Island boys, was sent by Mr McCaskill. He also mentioned another North Island Home, Penrose, given by Sir William Perry, which, though at present being used to train returned men. will in the future be used to train boys for country life. It was reported that Sir Arthur Longmore (Sydney) had visited Birch Hill in December, that cherries, raspberries, and vegetables were in good supply on Birch Hill, and that 50 pots of jam had been made. It was decided to ask the Rangiora. Oxford, and Okuku branches of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers to visit Birch Hill. Gratitude for gifts or for help and advice was expressed to Mrs Hennah, Miss Judith Weston, Mr A. P. Boyle. Mrs D. E. Currie. Mrs J. McCracken, Sister May,, Miss Colin Pyne, Mr K. E. Ewer (Lincoln College). and to Mrs J. O’Halloran.
