M.C.C. ALL OUT FOR 577

SOUTH AUSTRALIA FOUR FOR 351

BRILLIANT CENTURY TO HAMENCE (Rec. 11 pm.) ADELAIDE. Jan. 27. The W.C.C. team scored 577 runs in the first innings of its match against South Australia. W. R. Hammond did not declare when the match was resumed to-day, with the M.C.C. score 562 for nine wickets, and the last wicket fell after 10 minutes' play. South Australia at stumps had scored 351 for four wickets. In a third wicket partnership, P. Ridings and R. Hamence put on 203 runs in three hours.

After a sensational first over from D. V. P. Wright, in which he took the wickets of Craig and Bradman. R. Hamence played one of the most brilliant innings seen on the Adelaide Oval Jo reach his century in 113 minutes. Hamence treated the bowlers as second rate, and cover drove, straight drove, and square cut as if the bowlers were of club standard.

With his club-mate, P. Ridings, being content to hold his end up, Hamence simply belaboured his way to a century. Ridings, after being level with Hamence at lunch when each was 25 not out, had not reached 50 when his partner made his fourth first-class 100 for the season. Craig was dismissed by Wright’B first ball, a fast In swinger, which caught the batsman unawares, while Bradman played a weak shot to be caught at silly mid-on. At the tea adjournment. South Australia had scored 217 for two wickets, Hamence being 126 and Ridings 71. Called upon to substitute for J. Langridge when the left-hander left the ground after bowling one over because the strain wes too much for his leg injury, P. A. Gibb gave a display of petulance. He went up to the umpire, Scott, when he came on the field, and handed Scott his cap. Scott gave it back to him. Gibb walked away and threw it on the ground. Immediately the umpire, Smith, at the other end, and Hammond instructed Gibb to pick up his cap. which he did, putting it in his side pocket. At the tea interval Gibb apologised to Scott, who told Hammond he was sorry the incident had occurred. Hamence’s fine stand ended shortly after tea. when he drove a half volley from Wright into the hands of Ikin at silly mid on. when his score was 145. He put on 101 runs between lunch and tea. Ridings’ strong innings was all the more meritorious, as he is not normally an opening bat. He had to fill the position of opening batsman against the M.C.C. in October and then made 57. A strange feature of to-day s play was the extraordinary number of noballs sent down, 19 in all. Most of them either went to or over the boundary. Scores:— . . _ M.C.C. First Innings C.
