A LIKELY IMPROVER Hydro Belle, which is trained for Messrs R. J. and J. R. Cleave by A. Henderson, Temuka, impressed by h « ance to finish in third place to Indigo, and Blaze Away, in the smart time of 3min 19 2-ssec, in the Gore Memorial Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and she should continue to pay expenses this Se A °daughter of Sandydale and the Man o’ War mare, Kurow Belle, Hydro Belle won the H. J. Delargey Handicap at the Kurow Jockey Club’s meeting on the Oamaru course on December 21, and her next win was recorded on the same course at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on January 2. At that meeting she conceded up to 36 yards start to most of the field in the Oamaru Trot Handicap, and after being third into the straight she finished fast to win by two lengths from Gltinwellyn in 2min 47 l-ssec.
Jottings b Copper Trail looked well when he paraded in the Royal Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, but he lost any chance When he broke at the start. Now trained at Blenheim by Mr W. S. Bennett, who purchased him recently, Sir Carol will have his first start for his new owner at thte Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Fairy Wings began too slowly to have any change in the Waverley Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. Snowflake should be capable of a fast mile and a-quarter in the Railway Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting this week. Ben Led! gave a fair display in the' Stewards’ Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday, and he may prove a profitable proposition for Mr D. Blanchard this Reason.
Paying His Way Although he has not won a race this season, Jack’s Son has paid his way by earning £495 for five minor Driven by J. B. Laureate, which has been sent out favourite in two of the three races she has contested, finished in third place to Java and Bellisima in the Mitcham Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day, and if she has improved since then she should win at least one race at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting at Blenheim on Saturday. Returning to Form Checkmate indicated that he is returning to form by a solid effort to finish in third place to Indigo and Admiration in the Stewards* Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club** meeting on Saturday. Driven by his trainer, C. S. Donald, Checkmate began smoothly from the 12 yards mark, and when the field settled down he was following Admiration, Brown Shadow. Peter’s Pal, Ben Ledi, and Special Effort. Checkmate moved up to be handy to Admiration and Ben Ledi with three furlongs to go, and these three were followed into the straight by Indigo. Indigo finished fast to win from Admiration, with Checkmate doing the best of the others. Checkmate was having his first race after a spell, and he should be improved by the outing. Track Did Not Suit Elation showed his best form at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting when he earned £35 towards his expenses by finishing in fourth place in the Au Revoir Handicap. The fast track at Forbury did not suit Elation, which has shown his best form on heavy tracks. C. R. Berkett has this son of Quite Sure and Arran Sun looking well, and Elation should win races when he strikes conditions that suit him. Great Bel win Great Belwln, has raced- well for F. J. Smith this season, for three wins, four second placings, and a fourth placing in nine start*; and he will probably be sent out a good fav- °* url ; e , for the Bapakura Handicap at the Auckland Trottftig Club’s meeting on Saturday. A speedy gelding by Grattan Loyal from Glade, Selwin Bar may be a \< hl iu best in improvers’ races e Mariborough Trotting Club’a meeting at Blenheim on Saturday, Never Dangerous ;L°yal nier, which finished in third Place to Bonny Scott and Port Bowen in the Vauxhall Handicap on the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’a meeting was sent out 2-2 in the betting on the Waverley Handicap on Saturday; but he was never a possibility after makl ing a break in the early of ’hi race. A six-year-old Grattan Loyal gelding, Loyal* Flier has recorded a win and five minor placing* this season, and with age and experience he should make the grade to good company. Behaved Well Castigate was on his best behaviour at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting where he earned £230 for two minor placings. On the first day of the meeting he finished in second place to Lee Berry in the Otago Handicap, and on Saturday he followed Klldonnin and Jimmy Dillon home in the Crescent Handicap. Castigate’s improved form is a tribute to the ability of his owner-trainer, Mr L. V. Crothers, who has been very patient with the son of Quito Sure and Loyal Cast. Drifted, x Janet Hall showed promising form in the early part of the season to gain five minor placings; but she has not trained on as expected, and she would need to show a lot of improvement on her effort in the Telegraph Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday to win a race. A six-year-old Dillon Hall mare, Janet Hall began smartly to follow Horatio Nelson at the start, but she began to weaken with just over a mile covered and drifted out of the picture. Improving Limerick Pride showed staying ability when he recorded 4min 26 l-ssec from a 4min 39sec mark to earn the third prize of £25 for Mr W. L. Parkinson in the Telegraph Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday and, on this display, he should soon win a race. Canterbury Park T.C.
