ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY
“POSITION STILL SERIOUS” STATEMENT ISSUED BY i DEPARTMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. J A reminder to power supply authors* ties that the power position was still serious has been issued by the State Hydro-Electric Department because a number of authorities during the last few weeks exceeded their allocations. “Water and power positions are poor at present, and if authorities do not co-operate in keeping down the consumption, cuts may be necessary*, says the statement by the department Lake Taupo is one foot below the desired level, and Lake Waikaremoana is 15 feet below. “A critical time is expected towards the end of March, when the autumn, increase in the demand for power begins to take effect, and when it will be necessary to lose a certain amount of power generation by the flooding of the Horahora valley. That actionwill mean that 1,800,000 units a week will be lost with the going out of •action of the Horahora power station, but flooding is necessary then to allow for bringing into operation the new unit of the Karapiro station in April The lapse of a few weeks before the lost 1,800,000 units a week is replaced by the bringing in of a unit that will produce about 3,000.000 units a week, will be the time when power conservation might be necessary on a greater scale than at present.’*
