Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret have both been learning Afrikaans in preparation for the Royal tour of South Africa, on which they will embark next Saturday. Both speak French and e some German and now have acquired reasonable conversational ability in Afrikaans. The Queen has given special attention to her wardrobe in order that the best use was made of the dress materials presented to her and the Princesses by the Union’s woolgrowers, and. on this subject, the Queen has received much good advice from Princess Alice, who lived for several years in South Africa when her husband, the Earl of Athlone. was Governor-General there.

Mrs G. E. Cumming, of Dorset, England. will arrive in New Zealand by the Hinemoa. due in Wellington tomorrow, to visit her sister. Mrs A. W Russell. Murray place. Mrs Cumming, formerly Miss Peggy Maude, of Christchurch, is a niece of the late Nurse Maude, founder of the District Nursing Association in Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs Philip Humphries and their small daughter will leave Christchurch on Tuesday to join the Dominion Monarch on their way to Tanganyika, where Mr Humphries will take up a position in the Colonial Service. Mrs Humphries is the only daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Wood. Papanui road.

Mrs Hazel Scott (Christchurch) has been appointed judge of all dancing sections at the Hutt Valley Competitions Society’s festival in May The membership of the New Zealand Federation of University Women has increased from 438 in 1943 to 537 in 1946. A new branch has been formed at Nelson, with a membership of 50. and this branch has shown great keenness in organising concerts by wellknown New Zealand musicians. These facts are recorded in the secretary’s report presented to a conference of the federation yesterday. It is also reported that as a result of the efforts of the executive the federation Fellowship Trust fund has been completed, so that a fellowship may now be offered. It is noted that two members of the federation had received British council scholarships to enable them to t continue their studies overseas They were Miss Nancy Caughley. whose subject »s speech therapy, and Miss Pasalich. who specialises in physical education

A visitor to Christchurch this week is Mrs Gertrude Ahrens, who. with her two sons, is staying with her parents, the Rev. and Mrs A. N. Scotter. Mrs Ahrens is a graduate of Canterbury University College, and was on the staff of the Motueka High School until her marriage. With her husband, who was with the Department of Agriculture in New South Wales, she was for a time in that state: but later thev went to Fiji, where Mr Ahrens had charge of a training farm for Fijian young men. Returning to Sydney they were sent by the department to Lord Howe Island to direct production during the early war years. After the sudden death of her husband, Mrs Ahrens returned to the teaching profession, and she is on the staff of the high school at Parkes. New South Wales.

Under the heading “finance.” the secretary’s report of the New Federation of University Women, presented at the Dominion conference m Christchurch yesterday records that the branches of the federation had. during the years of war, contributed to the Polish Relief Fund and to British relief. An urgent appeal made in November. 1945. by the Swedish association on behalf of distressed uni-1 versity women in Poland had also met with a prompt and generous response from branches. Branches had all contributed to a recentlv established scheme by which parcels of food and clothing are sent to persons in Europe whose addresses have been supplied bv the international federation. The report mentions that the branches were contributing to a fund of £25.000 which the British federation hoped to establish to help university women in European countries
