SCHOLARSHIP IN AVIATION
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY APPROVED MEMORIAL TO MR J. C. MERCER (P.A.). WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. Cabinet has approved a pound for pound subsidy, with a maximum of £2OOO, on money raised to found a scholarship in aviation in memory of Mr J. C. Mercer. This was announced to-day by the Minister in charge of the Air Department (Mr F. Jones). The scholarship will be administered by the University of New Zealand, and will be available for post-gradual# work associated with aeronautics. 1 The fund raised to commemorate the services of Mr Mercer now totals about £l6OO. Mr Mercer lost his life when the aircraft in which he was travelling as a passenger crashed in the rear of Mount Hope on June 30, 1944.
