The Most Reverend Archbishop Panico, Papal delegate, who will arrive in Wellington from Sydney by the Wanganella on Monday to bless and open the Holy Name Seminary in Christchurch for junior aspirants to the priesthood, is accompanied by the Rev. Father Hehir, S.J., Rector, Father Terry. S.J., and Father McGinty, S.J., the staff of the seminary. A public welcome and civic reception are to be given to his Excellency by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) in the Civic Theatre on February 3. Archbishop O’Shea, of Wellington, and Bishop Liston, of Auckland, Bishop Lyons, of Christchurch, and Bishop O’Neill, Coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin, will also attend the seminary opening and the civic reception.
The appointment of Mr S. K. Carswell, who is at present agriculture master at the Dannevirke High School, to a similar position at the Ashburton Technical College, has been announced.
The appointment of Messrs David Barnes and R. G. Macmorran as directors of the State Advance Corporation is announced in the Gazette.
Mr R. E. Cairns has been appointed a member of the Licensing Committee for the district of Lyttelton.
Mr M. J. Meehan has been appointed a member of the board of trustees constituted under the Waimate Racecourse Reserve Act, 1881, according to a notice in the Gazette. A notice in the Gazette announces the appointment to the Carter Observatory Board, for a period of two years from January 1, of the following—Dr. M. A. F. Barnett, Dr. E. Marsden, Messrs C. G. G. Berry, R. G. Dick, D. C. H. Florence, R. C. Hayes, M. M. F. Luckie, F. F. Miles and E. P. Norman.
Inspector G. J. Paine, who will leave Christchurch to-morrow to take charge of the Invercargill police district, was met by members of the force at the Central Police station yesterday and presented with a leather suitcase. Superintendent H. Scott, who made the presentation, referred to Inspector Paine’s ability as a police officer and prosecutor. Inspector P. C. Felton, Inspector D. E. Holmes, Sub-Inspector C. Murphy, and Sub-Inspector J. Crowley also spoke.
Mr T. J. Kirk-Burnnand, Wellington, has been appointed as one of the two judges to the New Zealand brass bands’ championship contest to be held at Wanganui, commencing on February 3. The other judge will be Mr Frank Johnson, Australia. Mr Kirk-Burn-nand, who conducted the R.N.Z.A.F. Band before serving overseas with the Army, is a composer of music as well as a conductor, and is also a music critic of repute. He was the producer and organiser of the original Kiwi Concert • Party. Mr Kirk-Burnnand is at present attached to the National Broadcasting Service. Mr James Sturrock has been nominated on behalf of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee for the seat on the Christchurch Drainage Board, left vacant by the death of Mr W. J. Walter. Nominations will close on January 27.
