SHORTAGE OF GOODS
Sir, —I winder if the managers of any of the drapery wholesale warehouses could answer the following questions.. For over 40 years I have been a buyer of drapery from these wholesale firms, and in all this period I have never seen the shelves of these places so bare of gpods. Go and ask for fhe following every-day lines—sheeting, towels, tea towels, pillow slips, men’s working shirts s and trousers, boys’ shirts and knickers—and your answer is “None in stock.’’ I would like to know why the large retail drapery firms have a fairly large supply of the above-mentioped items, and yet the wholesalers none. I wonder whether this is the fault of the wholesale firms or of the Government controls, as the answer that there has been a war wori’t hold water. These goods are certainly available in the retail Shops and also much in departmental stores.—Yours. ONE OF THE SMALL STORES. January 16, 1947. [The managers of Bing, Harris and Company, Ltd., Ross and Glendining, Ltd., and Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Ltd., had no comment to make on this letter. They offered to give the correspondent an explanation of the position if he called on any of them.]
