ATOMIC "DEATH DUST”
POSSIBLE WEAPON IN WAR REPORT BY CANADIAN NEWSPAPER (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) OTTAWA, January 17. The Toronto “Daily Star” says the atomic energy plant at Chalk River could produce what was perhaps a more deadly weapon than the atomic bomb—"death dust.” It adds that this radio-active material can be produced in greater volume and in more deadly potency .at Chalk River than in any atomic plant in the world. The newspaper describes the “death dust” as tiny radio-active particles. The Minister of Defence (Mr Brooke Claxton) admitted that by-products of atomic energy research at Chalk River might be used for defence purposes, although Canada at present was not developing the dust for military purposes. The dust now being manufactured was purely haphazard. Every effort was being made to _ prevent microscopic partices of toxic poison penetrating scientists’ lungs and slowly killing them.
