NORTH ISLAND TOURNEY RESULTS OF OPENING ROUNDS (P.A.) WAIPUKURAU, Jan. 16. Because of slippery courts following two days’ rain, many competitors played in bare feet for the opening games pf the North Island, Hawke’s Bay, and Waipawa tennis championships, at Waipawa to-day. The weather was fine, but overcast. The best match of the day was that between J. E. Robson (Otago) and J. Barnett (Dannevirke) playing for Manawatu. Robson had the advantage in the first set, but after the second set, when he was leading 3-0, Barnett drew level and eventually led 5-4. In the latter stages Robson broke through his opponent’s service to be equal s>-5. Finally he won G-3, 7-5. In the early stages of the game between the youthful Aucklander. J. A. Barry, and D. Ormond (Waipukurau). Barry appeared to have trouble with his footwork. Ormond excelled with forehand drives, but Barry was the more consistent and won 6-3, 6-3. An Australian lawn tennis team will visit New Zealand about the middle of February, said the secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association (Mr A. C. W Mantell-Harding) last night. It is expected that the Australians will be here for about three weeks. The personnel of the team is not yet known, and no decision has yet been made by the New Zealand Association in regard to the players who will compete against the Australians. No arrangements haVe been made so far for a tour.
