VICE-CHANCELLOR RETIRES

SIR THOMAS HUNTER’S WORK

Sir Thomas Hunter, of Wellington, who has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand since 1929, tendered his resignation to the Senate yesterday afternoon. The Chancellor (Mr Justice Smith) said that the university owed a great debt of gratitude to Sir Thomas Hunter. He had given distinguished service as principal of Victoria Univer-

sity College, as a leader in adult education, and on the Senate, where his office required his attendance at many committees. He had reorganised the university office. The Chancellor moved a resolution recording appreciation of Sir Thomas Hunter’s exceptional ability and devotion to duty, and his conspicuously successful administration of university affairs.

After other tributes had been paid the motion was carried by acclamation.

Mr Justice Smith said the Senate must now consider what appointment should be made, in the light of proposed changes in the university. A vice-chancellor would probably be needed for co-ordination even after the permanent academic heads of colleges were appointed. The Senate adjourned before the matter was discussed.
