RECEPTION OF WELCOME
VISITORS ENTERTAINED At an informal gathering held at Ballantynes yesterday, a very sincere welcome was extended to the wives, sisters, or daughters of members of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, which is holding its annual meeting in Christchurch this week. The party was arranged by the executive, entertainment, and “Food for Britain” committees of the Travel Club, and the guests were received by the president of the club (Sir Joseph Ward) and Lady Ward. Songs were sung by Mrs Trevor Gallagher (Ailsa Crompton), for whom Mrs J. C. Cocks played the accompaniments, and an amusing and informative talk, “Samoan Episodes,” was given by Mrs H. A. Young. The visitors were Mrs Smith (wife of Mr Justice Smith, Chancellor of the University of New Zealand), and Mrs S. Eichelbaum (both of Wellington), Mrs W. H. Cocker and Mrs H. W. Shove (Auckland), Miss Stewart (Dunedin); and local guests included Lady Acland, Mrs A. H. Tocker (wife of the Rector of Canterbury University College), and Miss Doreen Hight, daughter of Sir James Hight (proChencellor of the University). Other specially invited guests were Miss Eileen Rose (Wellington), who is staying with Miss Hight. Mrs Liddle (Sydney), who accompanied her mother, Mrs F. W. Hobbs. Mrs J. Campbell (Auckland), and Miss Bernadine Wood, who is the guest of her aunt, Mrs Gladstone Ward. Mrs Smith, on behalf of the guests, thanked the artists and Mrs Young for providing the programme, and the Travel Club for its hospitality.
