Congratulations on being honoured with knighthood were expressed yesterday by the New Zealand University Senate to Sir James Hight, proChancellor; Sir Charles Hercus, Dean of the Medical School; and the Rt. Hon. Sir Humphrey O’Leary, formerly chairman of Victoria University College Council, and a member of the Senate. Members praised the contributions of Sir James Hight to education and public life, of Sir Charles Hercus to medical training, and of Sir Humphrey O’Leary to administration and justice.
The award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Pilot Officer Noel Callan Sharp, of the M.B.E. to Warrant Officer Charles Croall, and of the mention in dispatches to Warrant Officers James Robertson Ritchie and John Graham Lawrence, all of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, were recorded in last night’s Gazette. —(P.A.)
Mr Dudley Pilcher, formerly of the “Dominion.” Wellington, and the “Age,” Melbourne, has been appointed senior editor of United Nations’ publications, with- headquarters at Lake Success, New York.—New York, January 15.
The appointment of Messrs George Albert Amundsen and Clarence, Lyel Grange as members of the National Provident Fund Board was notified in yesterday’s Gazette. —(P.A.) Mr S. Eichelbaum, of Wellington, was yesterday re-elected honorary treasurer of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. Mr E. G. Kedgley, 8.A., 8.C0m., of the staff of Tauranga College, was appointed assistant registrar of the University' of New Zealand by the Senate yesterday.
Mr L. S. Nicol, of the Customs Department, and Mr G. D. L. White, of the Stabilisation Commission, New Zealand delegates to the preliminary committee of the United Nations conference on trade and employment, left Whenuapai yesterday by the Pan American clipper, Lightfoot. They expect to be away from New Zealand for six weeks. The New Zealand delegation to the Canberra conference on territories m the south Pacific, beginning on January 28, will be led by the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash), and will include Messrs A. G. Osborne, M.P., Parliamentary under-secretary to the Prime Minister, and J. G. Barclay, High Commissioner for New Zealand in Canberra. Alternate delegates and advisers will be Lieutenant-Colonel F. W. Voelcker, Administrator of Western Samoa; Messrs C. G. R. McKay, Secretary of Island Territories; W. Tailby, resident commissioner in Rarotonga; G. R. Laking, pf the Department of External Affairs; ana L. A. Sharp, assistant secretary to the High Commissioner in Canberra. The secretary to the delegation will be Mr C. Craw, of the Department of External Affairs.—(P.A.)
