ACCIDENTS
INSPECTOR OF PERMANENT WAY KILLED
COLLISION BETWEEN JIGGER AND ENGINE
(P.A.) TIMARU, January 15. A fatal accideqt occurred on the railway line near the Caledonian grounds, Timaru, to-day, when an inspector of the permanent way, travelling on a jigger, and an engine collided, the inspector being killed outright.’ He was Joseph Alfred Wallis, aged 61 years, married, of Queen street, Timaru. Wallis was travelling from Pareora and the engine was travelling south from Timaru to pick up a rake of cattle trucks. They collided in a cutting, and Wallis was thrown clear of the tracks. A guard who was in the engine rushed to help Wallis, but found him dead. An inquest into Wallis’s death was opened this evening and adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. The Coroner ordered a post-mortem examination.
DEATH FOLLOWS CONCUSSION DIVE INTO SWIMMING POOL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 15. A young man who was injured on Sunday afternoon at the Olympic swimming pool in Newmarket died in the Auckland Hospital this morning. He was Victor John Fullam. aged 26, of Otahuhu. He suffered concussion and injury to his soine when he struck his head after diving into the pool. FALL FROM TRAM Albert Shearman, a young man, of 86 New Brighton road, suffered head injuries when he fell from a tram at the corner of Cashmere road and Barrington street yesterday. At 2.40 p.m. he was admitted to the Christchurch ■ Public Hospital. He was reported to be in a satisfactory condition last; evening.
