SUMNER SHOPS TO OPEN ON SATURDAYS
BUSINESSMEN TO APPLY TO COURT FOR RULING
A unanimous decision to remain open all day on Saturdays was made by more than 20 shopkeepers at a special general meeting of the Sumner Business People’s Association held this week. The Sumner shopkeepers have thus taken the same attitude as the New Brighton Business People’s Association in defying the order by the Labour Department to close all grocers’ shops on Saturday. Many shopkeepers said they considered it would be detrimental to the borough to close the shops on Saturday. The chairman (Mr F. J. Be ban) said that the question affected not only the business people, but everyone in the borough. It was decided to apply to the Court for a ruling, and the following committee was appointed to attend to the matter:—Messrs L. G. Mitchell, T. Johnstone, J. Houlahan, P. Masters, and C. Goodman.
