CONFERENCE NEXT WEEK

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 13. Five basic items for discussion appear on the agenda of the extraordinary conference of the Federation of Labour called by the federation’s executive, to begin in the Trades Rail at Wellington on January ?1. A circular issued ‘ to affiliated organisations assures delegates to the conference that measures are being taken to provide for travel facilities and accommodation. “In view of the seriousness of the present industrial situation and the future of the trade union movement,” says the circular to affiliations, you are urged immediately to bring this extraordinary conference, its date, and purpose before members of your organisation, and to send delegates to the conference.” The first item on the agenda is consideration of the present .waterfront dispute and its effect on the Labour movement. The second item Is to sider the waterfront dispute in relation to decisions reached at the annual conference of the Federation of Labour in 1946. The third is to determine the federation’s policy in relation to the present waterfront dispute. The fourth item has as its object the making of provision to ensure observance qf the conference decisions. The final item is: “To examine the future national economy of New Zealand and to determine the place of the Federation of Labour in connexion with industrial activities, with a view to ensuring progressive development of the Labour movement and the Dominion.”

WORK AT LYTTELTON Again yesterday the waterfront at Lyttelton was working normally within the restricted hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For the seventh week since the dispute began the normal rate of cargo handling was maintained. The Lyttelton representatives at day’s meeting of the national council of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union in Wellington will be Mr J.
