INFECTIOUS DISEASE NOTIFICATIONS
SCATTERED CASES OF SCARLET FEVER
There was an unusually large number of infectious disease notifications in Canterbury last week, 32 in all; but there was nothing to cause any anxiety. In the previous week there were only three notifications, Nineteen notifications of tuberculosis of various forms accounted for the bulk of the total. Because of the nature of the disease it is not always realised by doctors that a case has not been notified before it comes into their care, and most of the 19 cases had been receiving medical attention for some time, Seven cases of scarlet fever notified last week, compared with only one in the previous week, but there is no suggestion of an epidemic, because all the cases are in widely separated localities: Timaru, Methven, Ashburton, Waimate, Hanging Roc** Christchurch, and Rangiora- There was at least one case of scarlet fever in every week last year, and 10 in the last week of the year. The remainder of the notifications last week were puerperal sepsis (four), typhoid (one), and undulant fever (one). This was the second case of undulant fever in a fortnight. There were no notifications on the West Coast
