BOHEMIAN

TROTTING

NOW IN V. ALBORN’S STABLE V. Alborn, who trains his team at Addington, recently bought Bohemian from Mr W. D. Inglis, who had bought him after he finished in fourth place to Sunny 1 Nelson, Right Royal, and Mareeta at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on January 12, 1946. Bohemian looked like reaching good company when he gave a fine performance at his fourth start for his new Owner to win the Kaiata Handicap at the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting on February 16, but after recording a third l placing at his next start he failed to hold his term. A well-bred gelding, Bohemian was educated and trained lor his early races by the late R. B. Berry, who drove him to win the Great Northern Stakes as a two-year-old in the 1943-44 season. By Lucky Jack, which won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 1937 and 1939 for Mr W. T. Lowe, Bohemian is out of Parisienne, which, together with her filly foal by Springfield Globe, was purchased by Mr J. R. McKenzie at the sales in November for 975 guineas, a record auction price for a brood mare. A splendid race mare, Parisienne, which won the Inter-Domin-ion Championships in 1938, is by Rey de Oro from Yenot, by Harold Dillon from a RothSbhild mare, which was out of Bessie 8., by Young Irvington from the Berlin mare, Minto, Jottings Mavis Grattan lost her chance when she broke in the early part of the Levels Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Sir Michael, which has won £6410 in stakes, is now assessed on 2min 9sec, 2min 41sec, and 4min 24sec. A four-year-old Lusty Volo horse, he has shown his best form up to a mile and five furlongs; but so far he has not succeeded over a twomile journey. Bridget Mac was never a possibility after being slow away in the Waimate Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Hall Ace, which finished in second place to Esto Fidelis in the Poolburn Trot Handicap at the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall from Rita Drusus, Silverlight, the favourite for the Kerrytown Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday, at no stage appeared to be going comfortably, and finished fifth. Has Some Ability The Sandydale gelding, Expensive, which is owned and trained by L. G. Smillie, Timaru, added another second placing to his record when he beat all but Garforth in his division of the Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Expensive raced well at the Waifrouaiti Racing Club’s meeting on January 1, when he finished in second place to Swaledale in the Domain Trotting Handicap after trying to lead all the way; and, on Saturday's display, a winning turn for him should not be far away. Finished "Fast

Sandy Potts failed to go away correctly at the start of the Mawheraiti Handicap at the Reefton Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, and he was more than 100 yards behind the leaders. Pimpernel amt Dawn Patrol, when he settled down to pace. Once he was balanced. I. G. Bennett quickly made up his handicap with him, to follow Pimpernel and Dawn Patrol into the straight. Dawn Patrol broke under pressure, and Sandy Potts finished -full of running to beat Pimpernel by a length. Owned by Mrs L. H. Bennett and trained by I. G. Bennett, Sandy Potts is a five-year-old gelding by Sandydale from Rose Potts, which is by Jack Potts from a Harold Dillon—Louvain Chimes mare. Sandy Chimes, which showed some ability to finish in second place to Pimpernel in the Rotokohu Trot Handicap, is also trained by Bennett. A four-year-oid gelding by Sandydale from Chatto Chimes, he races in the interests of Mr T. L. Bennett. Record Price

Mr W. J. Rosemire, Lexington, Kentucky, recently announced the sale of the Spencer horse, Doctor Spencer, which was the four-year-old champion trotter of 1946, to a group of Italian sportsmen for 50,000 dollars. The- price is believed to be En international record for one harness orse. In the past, horses for Italy have had to be relayed through England, but Doctor Spencer is to be sent direct to Genoa on an American ship. An exception to the rule of having to ship to England was made in the case of the twominute performer, Tara, which was shipped direct to Italy some years before World War 11, by Gianni Gambi. An Italian swimming champion, Gianni Gambi is named as the purchaser of Austin Hanover, which was recently sold by Mr S. Wood, Kentucky, to go to Italy. Bred by Hanover Shoe Farms, Austin Hanover took a record of 2min Usee last season. A handsome stallion, he is by Mr McElwyn (Imih 591 sec) from Holly rood Jessie (2rriin 4sec), by Belwin, by Hollyrood Janet, by Joe Dodge. Finished Fourth Redcllffe Direct raced well on a very heavy track to win the Winton Trotting Cup and: the Farewell Handicap at the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 28, and on the strength of that form he was confidently supported in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Driveh by his trainer, W. A. Thomas, this Wellington Direct gelding gave his usual honest display after starting smoothly from the 48 yards mark, but he was well back in fourth place at the finish.

Trained at Cust Monitress followed up her two platings at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting with another solid display to finish in third place to Sure Note and Java in the Kingsdown Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. An aged mare by Quite Sure from Regalare, Monitress, which is now trained at Cust by G. Alexander, looks well, and she should continue to pay her way this season.

By Wrack’s Star Rangi's Star, the winner of the Cambridge- Handicap at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a gelding by Wrack’s Star from Princess Ivy. He was bred by Mr W. Fay (Feilding), and his sire is by Wrack from a fine trotter in Native Star, which took a record of 4min 28 3-ssec some years ago. Native Star is by Native King put of Muriel Starr, which is by Harold Dillon from Muriel Maddjson, both of which were imported to New Zealand. Attractive Filly Although she did not appear a possibility in her division of the .Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, Marcia impressed as a likely type, and she may develop into a good performer for Mrs M. Pierce. A three-year-old filly, Marcia is by Dillon Hall from Regal Lady, which is by Wrack from Wild Nita, the flam pf winners in Vice Regal and Dark Hazard. Slow Away Indigo, which had shown encouraging form recently to finish in second place to Confirmed in the Canterbury Handicap rft the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting, and in second place to Lady Spray th the McLean Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, was confidently supported in the Levels Hanmeeting on Suatrday; but the son of Jack Potts and Waress lost his chance when he began slowly. When the field settled down he was in seventh place, but he was obviously handicapped by the heavy track. Indigo was unable to stretch out in his best style, and was fifth to finish.
