THORIUM FROM TRA VANCORE
EXPORT TO BRITAIN ARRANGED ATOMIC BOMB MATERIAL (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright). LONDON, January 12. The Travancore Government has announced that the British Government will assist in securing the co-operation of a British firm whose technical knowledge is essential for the production of thorium, a vital metal in atomic bomb construction, says the correspondent of the British United Press. Travancore contains the world’s largest deposits. The announcement added that the British firm was collaborating in the establishment in Travancore of a processing fadtory for monazite, of which thorium is a component. The arrangements contemplated the export to Britain for a limited period of certain quantities of surplus monazite, and also a quantity of the factory’s output of thorium. .. The British United Press says that the Premier of Travancore in 1945 emphasised that his Government would resist international or foreign control of its thorium.
