NEW MOTOR-SHIP LAUNCHED

DETAILS OF KOMATA (From Our Own Correspondent.) _ LONDON, Dec. 29. The cargo motor-ship Komata, built by Alexander Stephen and Sons, Ltd., Linthouse, for the Union Steam .Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., has been launched. She is 325 feet in length, 50 feet in breadth, and 26 feet depth. A vessel of 3700 tons gross, she has a single deck, with top-gallant forecastle and combined poop and bridge. Welding has been extensively used m her structure. There are 12 derricks to serve three hatches, with a heavy derrick to lift 25 tons. The vessel is designed for the carriage of general cargo, and occasionally coal from Australia. The poop and forecastle are fitted for light cargo, and there are horse stalls for traffic in horses in New Zealand. The propelling machinery consists of a six-cylinder two-cycle Sulzer Diesel, constructed by the builders, developing 3000 b.h.p. at 150 r.p.m. The scavenge valves are of a new pattern designed to secure unimpeded flow, both in the pumps and'on the upper cylinder ports, and are claimed to be an improvement on the disc type previously used. Auxiliary electric power is developed by four Ruston and Hornsby Diesels, direct coupled to 100 k.w. electric generators.
