TIMARU CLUB

ASPANALL WINS MAIN RACE SLOW TIMES ON HEAVY TRACK a meeting been wl t h track conditions than a LiJ h * x . Trotting Club’s j at on Saturday, torrential rain in the early hours of ai a rpl r < ? ay sat . urated the course, which had Ja^n a< lLi recel X ed ? thorough soaking when wl? « f^L^ ar 4 lier ln the week - The track «°® d ® d in some parts, the worst porli?” heing at the bottom of the straight, a Bl L eet o£ wat «r about 50 yards long covered the entire track. Many runners lost their chance when they broke up as they tried to make a safe pasbend - The track at the entrance to the straight cut up badly as tho ra cing progressed, and towards the V? e 5 3ay th® horses were pulled up PJfetically to a walk as they encountered this stretch of going before the sprint home.

The meeting opened before a large attendance in fine weather; but heavy rain, which fell about half-way through the programme, sent many people hurrying t *? e circumstances the totalisator did well to handle £38,789, compared with £32,523 10s at the corresponding meeting last year. Driven by R. Donald, Aspanall revelled in the heavy track conditions, and ne outclassed his field over the last halfmile of the John Hole Memorial Handicap, the main event on the programme, to win without being extended by 10 lengths from Jill, with Mandrake in third place.

Mandrake and Sypland began slowly, and when the field settled down the trotter, Frank Scott, was leading from Jill, Mareeta, and Mandrake. FranK Scott soon broke and Jill took over the role of pacemaker. With a mile and a quarter covered, Jill was leading from Aspanall, Believe Me (which had lost ground when he broke with less than a furlong covered), and Play Safe, with a gap of about 10 lengths to Mandrake, Frank Scott, and Redcliffe Direct. Once Donald challenged with Aspanall, the Lusty Volo gelding soon put the issue beyond doubt. Mareeta could not handle the going, and she at no stage appeared as a possibility. Capably handled by his trainer, M. Holmes, ftemlap brought his record to six wins and three minor placings this season with a splendid effort to win the Taiko Handicap with the greatest of ease from Noble Reta. Jervis Bay began smartly, and at the end of the first furlong he was leading from Noble Reta, Jill, Remlap, Lady Spray, Cumnock, Sypland, Play Safe, and Elaine Travis, with Castlebar at the rear of the field. Jill broke with about two furlongs covered, and with six furlongs to go Jervis Bay was leading from Noble Reta and Remlap. Remlap took the lead in the back straight and from then onwards he was always master of the situation. Owned by Mr J. Palmer and trained at Russlej? by M. Holmes. Remlap is one of the most improved pacers seen out this season, and he Tnay carry on to much better company. A five-year-old gelding, he is by Lusty Volo from Olive Rey.
