BECKENHAM CLUB OPENS NEW GREENS

Visitors from many parts of Canterbury were present when the Beckenham Bowling Club’s new green was opened on Saturday. The president of the club, Mr C. J. Forbes, outlined the club’s activities during the last 30 years and paid tribute to the work done by the Superintendent of Parks and Reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett) in laying down the greens. He algo thanked club members for building a fine pavilion from a large converted Air Force dwelling.

The chairman of the works committee, Mr H. Taylor, said the opening of the green met a long-awaited wish of the club.

The City Council was always willing to help promote recreational activities, especially when clubs were prepared to help themselves: as Beckenham had. done, said the Deputy-Mayor, Mr M. E. Byons. Mr J. N. Clarke, chairman of the reserves committee, Mr A. Clark, president of the Christchurch Bowling Centre, and Mr J. R. Smith, representing the New Zealand Bowling Council, also spoke. Mrs Bromley, who had made the club’s flag, raised it over the pavilion. The jack was rolled up by Mrs C. J. Forbes, arid Mrs F. Burgoyne sent down the first bowl. Visitors were entertained to tea, and pUy took place on all the greens. CHRISTCHURCH CENTRE OPEN SINGLES The Christchurch Bowling Centre will commence its open singles competition on Tuesday, January 21, the first game to start at 9 a.m. The following is the draw:— Section A—Edgeware green: Courtney (Canterbury), Giles (United), Gosney (Shirley).
