454 BUILT IN CITY LAST YEAR

Permits for 454 new houses valued at £635,998 were issued in Christchurch city in 1946. These figures do not include State houses or the several hundred houses erected in the other metropolitan areas. House construction accounted for more than half of the estimated value of city building permits, the total of which was £1,113,920. In addition, eight blocks of flats valued at £11,500 were built and many thousands were spent on the conversion of 38 existing houses into 96 flats. In 1945 the value of building permits in Christchurch city was £862,000. BUILDING PERMITS CHRISTCHURCH FIGURES Building permits to the value of £857,165 were issued by the Christchurch City Council for the first nine months of the financial year ending March 31 next. This is a substantial increase over the figure for the same period of the last financial year. Figures for the number and value of permits in each ward for the nine months ended December 31, which those for the same period of 1945-46 in parenthesis, are as follows:

The corresponding” figures for December, 1946, and December, 1945, are as follows: Central, inner area, 7—£4610 (8 —£7750); central, outer area. 10—£12,020 (7—£1906): St. Albans, 20—£10,035 (26—£15,948); Sydenham. 20—£8135 (12—£4594); Linwood, 25 —£5098 (14—£2246); Spreydon, 16—£4785 (10—£7447): Woolston, 17—£59.175 (8— £3234); New Brighton, 22—£5641 (11— £2237): Sumner. 4—£775 (3—£1368). Totals: 141—£114,274 (9£-£46.730).
