DARIUS SURE TO IMPROVE MAY RUN WELL TO-DAY Darius is an acceptor in both, the Wellington Stakes and the Juvenile Handltap at Trentham to-day. He will be ridS? n , bs .'u V,. J - Broughton, so it seems hkely that he will start in the Juvenile Handicap as Broughton will be riding Howe in the Wellington Stakes. Darius had his only two starts to date at Riccarton and at his second start he, finished third to Battle Abbey and Sea Flower Hi the Irwell Handicap, after suffering interference early in the race. On that occasion he was finishing well, and the sixfurlong journey to-day may be more to his hking than the five furlongs of the Irwell Handicap. Darius is a powerfullybuilt colt bv Bulandshar from the New Zealand Oaks winner, Brunhild, and is the type to make a better three-year-old than a two-year-old. He is certain to improve as the season progresses. Change of Stables Le Sonnet, a three-year-old brother to Air Ace, is now being trained by L. Cavalier at Riccarton. Le Sopnet is held on lease by Mr J. Wilson, and earlier • season won a division of the NoVlce 1 . Stakes at the Ashburton spring meeting, his only success to date. He is a heavy topped gelding, and his off- fore joint has given trouble occasionally but he gallops well enough to win races. He is by Leighon from Gay Sonnet, a Gay Lad mare that earlier bred a useful winner in Gay Parade. Easy Track Will Suit Lincoln Fair has not raced since she ran unplaced in the Seymour Hack Handicap on the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, but the lack of recent racing should not affect her chances in the Muritai Handicap at Trentham today. She is a class above the average «ack sprinter. The easing of the tracks at Trentham will be to her advantage. A Good Field A particularly good field of hack sprinters wiH parade m the Muritai Handicap at Trentham to-day. Tanith. Rhodesia, Cressida, Grand Affair, Castlebrae, Beautiful, Pellmeer, King of Quiz. Beau Son, and Luminate all won over the holidav meetings; and Frances. Lincoln Fair, and Fleetwood won earlier in the season. Most of the field are three-vear-olds, and should be subject to a good deal of improvement. Trip Doubtful It is unlikely that Palm Bearer will be on hand for the later days at Trentham. as she is still suffering from side trouble. Her principal mission was to have been the Desert Gold Stakes. She is now to be given a good spell. Rider Engaged The Riccarton apprentice H. Ford has been engaged to ride Signal Officer in the Wellington Cup. Ford has ridden well for R. E. McLellan’s stable this season, and is the patient type of rider likely to suit Signal Officer. Shining Ring Withdrawn was .'?!‘ hdrawn lrom th® ' Wellington Stakes at 11 aan. yesterday.— < _u. I]
