HEAVY RAINFALL AT REEFTON

The stormy weather at Reefton abated slightly on Thursday afternoon, and from nightfall there were only occasional heavy showers. There was much rain in the back country, and this flooded the Inangahua river, but the level of this stream fell during Thursday night and yesterday morning, though still considerably swollen, it fell about two feet in 12 hours. There was minor flooding in the district, but no serious damage was dpne. Intermittent heavy showers fell yesterday and the weather was cold. In the 36 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday 3.18 in of rain were recorded. Of this total 2.33 in fell in the 12 hours ended at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning. The heavy rain did not commence until late on Wednesday night.

FLOODING IN KARAMEA DISTRICT

Fairly extensive flooding in the Karamea district resulted from the heavy rain on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, and service cars were unable to. negotiate a stretch of road at Te Namu, where flood water had backed up to a good depth. There was considerable flooding at Oparara, in the Karamea district, and roads in the locality were also irr y asSable.

South Westland fared lightly in the recent storm on the West Coast, and there was not the same serious flooding as in the northern portion of the province. Rewanui, like Otira, had phenomenal rainfall. The Teremakau river was in its biggest flood for many years, and whitebait fishermen had their harbours and other installations washed completely away, but this will not cause great concern to the fishermen. as the season is almost over.
