SAVING FOOD FOR BRITAIN
COUPON CONTRIBUTIONS DECLINE SHARPLY
“As was anticipated, the number of coupons surrendered last week fell off,” says a bulletin issued by the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee yesterday. “However, a sustained effort is called for as a demonstration to the people of Britain that we, in a very favoured land, will voluntarily deny ourselves still further, from now until Christmas, in order that the maximum amount of food may be shipped to them. Coupons surrendered during the week ended November 9 were:—meat, 21.663 (£270 15s 9d); butter. 413 (206i1b).
Returns of fat last week were the lowest for some time, only 4cwt being sent to the works. Almost all of this came from the city area, and no raw fat was received.
The Famine Emergency Committee has appealed to farmers to treat every scrap of fat as a valuable commodity, and has issued a reminder that district committees ana sub-branches of the Red Cross Society will help if containers are difficult to obtain.
