Hon. J. O’Brien (Minister oi Transport) arrived at Greymouth yesterday from. Wellington, and will commence his election campaign in Westland on Tuesday.

A tribute to tie work of Mr W. J. Walter was paid by the chairman of the Christchurch Technical College Board of Governors (Mr T. W. West) last evening, when a motion of sympathy was passed with Mr Walter’s relatives. “I think I am safe in saying that no man in Christchurch certainly, and probably in the South Island, was as well known as Mr Walter in local body work,” said Mr West. “His name will be remembered for many years for the excellent service on many local bodies. He served the well and faithfully from 1938 to 1944.”
Regret at the death of Mr W. R. Patrick, a former New Zealand cricket representative, was expressed at the annual meeting last evening of the New Zealand Cricket Council.
Mr R. Darroch, signals and electric lines inspector, Railways Department, Greymouth, will leave Greymouth next Thursday on transfer on promotion to the position of inspector at Auckland. Mr Darroch win be succeeded by Mr R. J. Myerscough, Timaru.
Mr H. Eggleston was yesterday appointed by the North Canterbury Catchment Board as classifier for the Oxford-to-the-Sea drainage area. It is expected that the classification will be completed'by the end of December. Mr G. "F. Bothamley, retiring Clerk of the House of Representatives, who has been associated with the Legisla- i tive Department since 1906, was the guest of honour at a farewell gathering in Wellington on Thursday afternoon. His successor, Mr H. N. Dollimore, presided. Mr Bothamley was presented with an armchair and, on behalf of Mrs Bothamley, received a Queen Anne silver coffee pot. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) made the presentations.—(P.A.)
