TRAINING OF MAORI LEADERS
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GIRLS The council of Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College will award two scholarships, tenable at the school for a period of four years, commencing in February. The scholarships will be awarded only to girls who, in the opinion of their teachers, are likely to qualify at the end of the four-year course for entry to either the teaching or nursing professions, and to follow the chosen profession with success. As admission to these professions requires a certificate of satisfactory health, all applicants must be of good health and sound constitution. Candidates should be under 15 and must have passed the sixth standard.
Head teachers of schools with suitable candidates are asked to submit applications by December 7 from pupils desiring consideration, accompanied by reports from the teacher and the principal. In making recommendations head teachers are asked to keep in mind that the idea behind the award of the scholarship is the ultimate provision fron«‘ amongst themselves of leaders of the Maori race, and to select candidates accordingly. Preference will be given to girls of half, or more than half. Maori descent.
