AMBERLEY SHOW
GREAT DISPLAY OF FAT LAMBS
LIGHT HORSE CLASSES EXCELLENT In one particular the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association has the advantage over every other Canterbury association, and that is in its ground. For the annual show of the Amberley association yesterday the ground looked its best, apd the weather was good, a few days which must have given the officials a deal of anxiety. The gate was bigger than it was last year, and entries were bigger than they have ever been. The Amberley show, which in earlier days was purely a horse show, has always attracted an excellent entry of light horses, and it did so yesterday, but the show was chiefly notable for the exceptional display of fat sheep, particularly fat lambs. It would be very hard to find a display of fat lambs to equal yesterday’s showing anywhere in the country. The classes generally were large, and so even was the standard that the judge had a most difficult task in every class in selecting the placed entries. The lambs were uniformly of the highest merit, showing a high degree of careful breeding, and feeding. Without doubt the show in this section was easily the equal of any Metropolitan show. The challenge cup for the best pen of three lambs of export weight was won by R. James, whose entry of Southdown-Corriedale cross would be very hard indeed to fault. The Amberley show has always been notable for the excellent competition in the classes for-flock sheep, and yesterday’s entry was well up to standard. A fairly wide diversity of types is seen at Amberley, but fine wools predominate, and in this section the show was of high merit. Among the stud sheep, the best display was that of Southdowns, where some excellent sheep were shown. James Petrie, who-secured a large share of the major prizes in the breed at Rangiora last week, ag&in had a very strong team forward, and repeated his Rangiora performance. The natural condition classes were particularly good, perhaps because the scarcity of labour now makes it more difficult for the average studmaster to give the necessary time to preparing sheep for display in show condition. . , Competition ,in the Corriedale classes was smaller than might have been expected at Amberley, out some sheep of high merit were displayed by the two breeders represented. The champion ram was from Mrs E. M. Sloss and was one of a pair or noggets in the natural condition classes. He was an excellent ram, well woolled, and of great size and Quality. The ewe champion was. a choice sneep from A. M. and T. R. Saunders Competition was good among tne halfbreds, where the Est. of Jas. Stevenson showed the champion ram. He was a sheep of good quality, carrying an outstanding fleece packed on densely all over him. The champion ewe was from Colin Mclntosh, and was a fine example of the breed, with a splendid carcase and well woolled. Except for the Jerseys where th«e. was a good display, entries in the cattle sections were small. Awards were as follows: CHAMPIONSHIPS 'Sheen —Corriedale ram: Mrs E. M. Sloss. Corriedate ewe: A.
