SEALING SEASON IN N.Z.
6187 SKINS BROUGHT BACK (P.A.) WELLINGTON. November 1. Although the main hunting grounds on sub-Jintarctic islands remained closed, the first sealing permitted in New Zealand waters for 22 years brought a catch of 6187 skins for the season. It is not intended that there shall be an open season next year. Because of the depredations oi hunters, rookeries were in danger of extinction when the ban was imposed 22 years ago. However, seals were reported to have regenerated to such an extent that fishermen complained of their competition and an open season was declared from July 1 until September 30. this year. The first expedition this year brought back 1100 skins from the Smanders. 60 miles from Bluff
Collectors of Customs during the season just closed stamped 5974 Skins in Southland. 160 in Otago, and 53 in Westland, but of the 160 recorded for Otago. 149 were taken in the Southland area. Rookeries close to the tourist district of Milford Sound were protected
