REHABILITATION OF TEACHERS

NATIONAL PRESIDENT PLEASED

After touring many schools in th« North Island as president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, Mr W. J. Cartwright, headmaster of the Normal School, Christchurch, is well pleased with the rehabilitation of returned servicemen. Yesterday he said he was glad to see the number of small schools with a teacher’s house attached which had been placed in the charge of retUl-hed men. This provided a home for deserving cases, a statable situation fof- settling down, and also an opportunity to study and develop special ability. Throughout his tour, teachers were well satisfied with the arrangements made between the Education Department and the institute fbr assisting in rehabilitation, Mr Cartwright said. The men themselves were a fine type. They were keen, and seemed to have a breadth of vision through their travels and experience which would be an ifiva^i a ble asset to the profession. . There were cases of teachers working in very difficult conditions. Mr Cartwright continued. Accommodation and transport were the greatest problems m remote areas. He referred to one school. 30 miles from Dargavillp where no public transport service was available, and the teacher was compelled to close the school to gO shopping when a farmer in the neighbourhood happened to be going to town, and then on°n the srhool on Saturdav tn recover the lost time. In the same district, one teacher had to walk six miles to the nearest transport before nbtaming supplies.
