OIL FROM SWEDISH SHALE

VAPOURISATION SYSTEM USED (From Our Own Correspondent.) NEW YORK. October 18. At Tornberg. 200 miles north of Stockholm, Sweden has a deposit of oil shale which it became necessary to develop during the war because American and other foreign sources of petroleum were cut off. Dr. Gustav Egloff. who recently returned to the United States after a visit to Scandinavian countries, 'inspected this project. At Tornberg he reports that holes are drilled 50 feet into the shale. Into these holes electrical heaters are dropped. The current is turned on for three months for a preliminary warming up. Then six holes are connected by pipes to carry away vapours to the refinery. This pipe system works for two months. After that the oil in the shale has all been vapourised, and the whole apparatus is moved to new ground. The Swedes got not only ail that they needed, but other oenefiis. The soil proved to be such a good insulator that it retained the heat. In fact, not until 30 years have elapsed will the soil return to its normal temperature. So the Swedes now grow vegetables in warm soil and harvest bigger and oarliar rroDS.
