INFANT MORTALITY
Sir,—As a mother of a young family, with a feeling of pride in the history of the Plunket Society’s work, I have been distressed to notice the alarming increase in the deaths of babies in the first week of their lives. I have heard this fact commented on repeatedly by other mothers; and we feel that attention should be drawn to it, and possible causes sought. Several have been suggested; for example, the anxiety felt by many women who have until recently been unable to find vacancies in nursing homes. Many would be most grateful if you could get an expert! opinion on this subject, which is a matter of interest and concern to all women at the present time.—Yours,
[A leading Christchurch gynaecologist said he did not consider there had been any great increase in deaths as mentioned. Accommodation was a cause of concern to prospective mothers, relatives, doctors, nurses, and the hospital authorities; but in Christchurch the new provision made at the Burwood Hospital met the position fairly well. Even though difficulty might be experienced in making reservations at nursing homes, prospective mothers could be assured that provision would be made for their confinement.]
