MONDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) x REMANDED Peter Laurance Harkess, a labourer, aged 18, was remanded to September 26 for sentence when he pleaded guilty to charges of converting motor-cycles valued 2? 30 £5O, the Property of Ronald Gordon Dickson and William Parke Richardson respectively, and to charges of stealing a plane and electric light fittings, of a total value of £3, the property oi Frederick John Whear, and a bicycle, at £7, the property of Murray Richard Logan. Senior-Detective F. J. Brady said that accused was at present under thte supervision of the Child Welfare Department. Z? 1 ® rhotor-cycles had been ridden round the city and suburbs, and into the country. Apart from a muffler being missing from the machine owned by Richardson, no damage had been done. The articles owned by Whear, who rented a room at aCcnised s home, had been sold to a sec-ond-hand dealer. The cycle had been stolen from Cathedral square, accused stating that he took it because ft was raining and he did not have the money for his tram fare. Accused had altered the bicycle and had intended to keep it. HeJJad been before the Children’s Court Reginald John Bell, a tailor, aged 43, was remanded till September 26 on a charge of obscene exposure in a public place. Bail was fixed at £5O in accused’s own recognisance, with one surety of £5O, and accused was ordered to report daily to the police. FINE FOR BOOKMAKING ®Claude Machirus, a labourer, aged 37, pleaded guilty to a charge of bookmaking. Senior-Detective Brady said that the accused had been stopped in Hereford street on Saturday afternoon. He hed in his possession £l7 17s 6d in betting material and more than £23 in money. He took bets about the town and was not in a big way of business. Machirus i stated that he took bets only from his friends, “for a hobby.” In imposing a fine of £45, the Magis- « e , sa l d Machirus had been fined £25 last year on a similar charge. It was not a fit subject for a hobby or an amusement .
