ACCIDENTS
TWO BOYS BURNED EXPLOSION IN SCHOOL WORKSHOP (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 23. Two schoolboys suffered burns when a small tin of methylated spirits exploded in the metal workshop at the Avondale Intermediate High School this, afternoon. They were Frank Robert Edgar Langstone, aged 12, a son of Mr B. Langstone, of Mount Albert, and a grandson of Mr F. Langstone, M.P., and Leslie Kenneth Wilson, aged 13, a son of Mr D. Wilson, of Avondale.
The accident occurred when Form II boys were taking a nfetal work lesson in the workshop under the metal work instructor, Mr F. G. N. Martin. It is presumed that flames from a blow lamp standing on a bench set fire to a small tin of methylated spirits used to light the lamp, causing the tin to explode and the burning fluid to spurt over the two boys. Most of it went over Langstone, who suffered severe burns to the head, face, and arms, but the flames were soon ei.tinguished by the prompt action of Mr Martin in taking off his laboratory coat and wrapping it tightly round the boy. Pending the arrival of an ambulance Langstone was taken in a car to a local doctor. Wilson, who suffered burns to the hands and neck, was attended by some of the other boys. On being removed to the Auckland Hospital, Langstone was admitted, but Wilson was sent home after having his burns dressed. Langstone’s condition is not serious.
