All three organisations are seeking higher wages. On the west coast the Firemen’s and Cooks and Stewards’ Unions voted to return to work on the same conditions a s the American Federation of Labour maritime unions, thus ending the Congress of Industrial Organisations portion of the strike. The West Coast ports resumed activity to-day and the first sailings are expected to-morrow. The leader of thd American Federation of Labour pilots, masters, and mates branch (captain H. F. May)’ said thafrin view of the settlement of their dispute with the C.LO. seamen over clearance permits, members were returning to their ships, but might walk off on September 30 -if a new«wages contract was not secured.
