UNITED NATIONS

. POSITIONS WITH SECRETARIAT

Terms of engagement with the United Nations Secretariat, New York, vary in different cases; but the guiding principle is to obtain a staff comprised mainly of persons who intend to make the work their life career. This does not include temporary, exchange, or “on loan” appointments in special cases; and it is not intended thsrt “career” members should lose touch with their countries of origin, periodic leave Being granted to enable them to return there. This information comes from Mr W. N. Pharazyn, the New Zealand recruiting representative of the United Nations.

After a period of probation, contracts for permanent employees will possibly be renewable every five years up to the normal retiring age of 60, which may be extended to 65 in special cases.

Though housing is extremely difficult to obtain and rents are very high, the United Nations Organisation has housing projects and arrangements in progress which may mitigate this difficulty. Allowances for children and their education are expected. The age for application is generally 21-50 years; but some positions have a limit of 35 or 40, while interpreters and translators may apply up to the age of 60.
