Queen Mary visited a display by the International Wool Secretariat, which shows the versatility of wool for manufacture. The Queen described the varieties as “very ingenious.”—London, September 21. Her Excellency Lady Freyberg, accompanied by Miss Rosemary Eley, arrived in Auckland from Wellington on Saturday morning and will return to Wellington to-day. In Auckland she opened the Cheeseman memorial spring show of native flowers and in the evening attended the Auckland Choral Society’s presentation of “Elijah” in the Town Hall. Mrs A. Keith Hadfield (Fendalton), president of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association, will leave to-morrow for Wellington to attend an executive meeting of the Kindergarten Union, of which she is vice-president Lady Sldey (Dunedin) will also attend the meeting. Mrs Lawrence Wilson (president of the Christchurch Central Townswomen’s Guild), Mrs F. Fate (secretary), Mrs J. M. Forbes (president of the North Christchurch Guild), and Mrs R. Lake (secretary), and Mrs A. Allott (president of the Riccarton Guild), and Mrs J. H. Bray (secretary) have returned from Wellington, where they attended a meeting of the council of the Dominion Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds. Mrs Wilson and Mrs Lake were elected members of the Dominion executive. Mrs J. D. Ormond (Wallingford, Hawke’s Bay), who was a delegate to the recent Red Cross meeting held in Christchurch, and has since been visiting her daughter, Mrs Jack Acland, Mount Peel, is spending a few days with another daughter, Mrs T. Maling. Hanmer, before returning,to Hawke’s Bay. Dr. R. Winterbourn will be the principal speaker at the annual meeting and social gathering of the Friends of the Kindergarten, to be held early in October. The Glenelg health camp at Christchurch received an unsolicited testimonial last week when the father of a girl who had spent six weeks at the camp attended the annual meeting of the Westland Health Camp Executive to pay tribute to the work of the camp authorities. He stated that his child had suffered from malnutrition over a period of years, and that making her eat the types of food she needed had been a difficult task. During her sixweeks stay at the camp she had gained 101 b in weight, had developed the habit of daily exercises, and learned to eat the foods necessary to health. He thanked the executive for sending his child to the camp, commended the work of the camp authorities, and wished the health camp scheme every success in the future. At the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society held last week Mrs H. Wyatt, honorary organiser of the society’s street day appeal, reported that the gross proceeds of the appeal amounted to £932. It was also reported that as a result of a subscription concert given by the Orpheus Choir the sum of £lBO had been handed to the Plunket Society. Votes of thanks to Mrs Wyatt and to Mr F. C. Penfold, conductor of the Orpheus Choir, were recorded. Mr and Mrs J. Hallin Ford and their daughter have arrived in Christchurch from Canada and are visiting Mrs Fora’s mother. Mrs J. S. Bowie. The resignation of Mrs A. C. McKillop from the committee of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society was received with regret at the last meeting of the committee, and tribute was paid to her work as a member of the central committee for Siany years, as convener of the garening committee at the Karitane Hospital. and latterly as president of the Spreydon-Addington sub-branch of the society.

For the Karitane Hospital, the matron (Miss K. G. Hall) reported to the last meeting of the committee of the Plunket Society that included in the 21 babies admitted to the hospital during the month were four sets of twins and a premature baby that weighed only 21b 3oz. Twenty-two babies were discharged during the months 10 mothers were admitted to the mothercraft section and 10 discharged.

A devoted worker for St. Martin’s House of Help, Mrs Minnie Emilyn Hobden, widow of Mr H, I. Hobden, died in Christchurch on Friday. For years, with other friends from Fendalton. she distributed food and clothing at the home, and later as a member of St. Barnabas’s Sewing Guild she remade and renovated clothing for distribution amongst the needy. Miss Jody Taylor, daughter of Mrs W. R. Taylor, private secretary to the United States Minister (Mr Avra M. Warren), is expected to arrive in New Zealand from America next month. She has just completed her second J’ear at Green Mountain Minor Colege. in the state of Vermont.
