MAORIS BEAT MANAWATU
BRIGHT DISPLAY BY BACKS PALMERSTON N„ Sept. 22. The New Zealand Maori team, in a brilliant exposition of Rugby football, beat Manawatu by 14 points to 11. The team was slow in settling down and developing combination, but in the second half their backs, in a series of rapier-like thrusts, cut the opposition to ribbons. The ins!de backs, J. Gardiner (Bay of Plenty) and L Proctor (Auckland), had matters much their own way, and featured in thrilling, swerving rims which dazzled their opponents. The wingers, E. Carrington (Poverty Bay) and W. Jjelamere (Bay of Plenty), both proved too fast and clever for Manawatu, while P. Smith (North Auckland) at centre completed an outstanding back line. Manawatu’s score consisted of two tries, one converted, and a penalty goal, to the Maoris’ three tries, one converted, and a penalty goal. Only the consistently solid tackling by Manawatu prevented the Maoris from compiling a much bigger score.
