LONG SERVICE WITH FIRM
RETIREMENT OF MR C. WHITLEY After 57 years of continuous service' with Andrews 1 and Beaven, Ltd., Mr Charles Whitley, of 476 Page’s road, has retired. Mr Whitley began with the firm in 1889 as an improver-apprentice in the millwrights shop and for many years was principally engaged in the manufacture of chaffcutters for the New Zealand trade. Whten the export of this class of machinery was de-
veloped, he built machines which went to Australia, Tasmania, India, and the Argentine. He helped in the building of the first Empire double-bagger chaffcutter, the largest chaffcutter in the world.
When the tractor cam.e into use after the 1914-18 war, the demand for chaffcutters lessened, and Mr Whitley worked in the manufacture of seed and grain cleaning machinery, a class of machinery which required the services of skilled millwrights. For the last 20 years he has been in 'charge of the sieve making department. Although advanced in years. Mr Whitley carried on throughout the war, while younger men were with the forces.
Mr Whitley is an extremely active man for his years. As a young man he took a keen interest in all sport and played for Addington Pirates in the very early days. He then transferred to the Merivale Club, plhying halfback for its senior team.
Mr Whitley’s fellow-workmen met him recently to wish him a happy retirement. He was presented with a fireside chair, and a framed photograph, suitably inscribed, and a cheque from the company.
