ITALIAN TREATY

COMMISSIONS REJECT AMENDMENTS I P.P I3 PARIS, Sept. 18. The Italian Economic Commission of the Paris Conference rejected by 16 votes to 1, a Greek attempt to secure a provision in the Italian treaty for the repayment by Italy of a war indemnity of £195,000 exacted during the Italian occupation. Sir Samuel Runganadhan (India) said he would vote against all amendments and would support the draft treaty, as he did not wish the peace treaties to be vengeful He opposed Jugoslav and ’White Russian amendments limiting the free ■ territory of Trieste to the city limits. He criticised the South African proposal to extend the free State to include the Istrian peninsula where, he said, the Italian settlers had remained aloof and failed to assimilate themselves to the Slovene majority in the countryside. Mr Winiewicx (Poland) said th« South African proposals sounded very convincing, but were on the unsound basis of possession being law. In the Italian Military Commission, Admiral Manola (Jugoslavia), “to show goodwill and conciliation,” withdrew an amendment to the Italian treaty to reduce the number of Italian carabinieri from 65,000 to 30,000. A South African amendment to increase the size of the Italian fleet was rejected by 20 votes to 1.
